After the Schnittke, Menuhin encouraged me to play an encore. Menuhin pushed me out on to the stage and sat among the orchestra listening to it. Five days later, he passed away. The Menuhin Competition takes place at venues across London from 7 to 17 April. Yet the violinist has long been curious about his Jewish family, which traces its roots back to Berlin.

Fifteen years ago, Hope began to dig more deeply into the biographies of Jewish musicians, especially composers of German and Austrian heritage who migrated to Hollywood. Much as a cultural archaeologist might do, Hope delved into the biographies, archives and personal estates of the artists. Curious, he followed the trail of the immigrants through Hollywood, interviewing their children, grandchildren and surviving relatives. Extensive archives at Paramount Studios in Hollywood turned up an unbelievable treasury filled with hand-written correspondence, scored notes, letters.

There was a substantial need for film composers in Hollywood in the s and s, as the film industry was booming thanks to the advent of the talkie. Some film productions could be likened to an assembly line and studio heads traveled frequently to Europe to acquire the talents — the best of the best.

  3. So schreiben Sie Ihr Sachbuch (Sachbuch - vorbereiten, schreiben und verlegen 2) (German Edition).

The opulent orchestral sounds that we still hear in big Hollywood films today can be traced back to this time. In his research, Daniel Hope has found parallels to the refugee crisis currently happening in Europe. They sat together as a group of eight or nine working on a film and delivered every so often a phrase. Only the rare immigrant had already made a name for himself that he could use to gain work in the booming film industry.

But he had trouble with the American studio philosophy, which degraded composers as it positioned them as mere service providers, Hope uncovered. The exchange between those who created culture and the European immigrants was lively. And in doing so, lots of information was exchanged, from mere gossip to important news about the immigration authorities and current job offers. The infamous Villa Aurora, where novelist Lion Feuchtwanger and his wife Martha lived, became something of a meeting point, a reception center for those newly emigrated.

In addition to the immigrants, a number of famous actors and personalities, including Charlie Chaplin, came to the villa to meet. The majority of the European immigrants who arrived in Hollywood never came into contact with the glamorous side of the film industry. Many struggled to even scrape by, and worried about a lack of money to even cover their basic needs like clothing, rent and food. Most of them had to leave Nazi Germany virtually overnight after Hitler came to power in , leaving everything behind.

Success as a film composer in the US had other downsides as well and could completely destroy an ambitious composer with dreams of recognition. Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who was much celebrated in Europe as a musical wunderkind, never felt accepted or at home in the USA — despite his greatest successes. Korngold won two Oscars for his film soundtracks. Korngold was accused of having sold his soul.

Yet they were persecuted for their work in film.

One day I heard what I thought was birdsong coming from the stage. Opinions of Vivaldi divide between those who adore and those who despise him. Yes, Vivaldi was incredibly prolific. Born in Venice in into a desperately poor family, Vivaldi chose the priesthood early on—it offered good chances of advancement. But his plans were scuppered when his severe asthma meant that he was unable to conduct long masses and because, gossip has it, he would nip out for a glass of something during the sermon.

What changed his life forever was an unusual job offer. Vivaldi understood immediately that he had a unique ensemble at his disposal. Many of his greatest works were written for these young ladies to perform. Very soon, all Europe was enthralled. He remained there for 12 years and, after an itinerant period working in Vicenza and Mantua, returned to Venice in The s were a difficult time. Vivaldi needed an income. At the top of every movement, Vivaldi gives us a written description of what we are about to hear.

Bach was so taken with the music that he rearranged several of the concertos for different instrumentation. A legend was born. The pope threatened him with excommunication. Suddenly, he was out of fashion. Once again he was broke. Centuries passed. A revival of sorts began when scholars in Dresden began to uncover Vivaldi manuscripts in the s. But what really redeemed him was the record industry. It won the Grand Prix du Disque. His problem, he explained, was not with the music, but how we have treated it.

We are subjected to it in supermarkets, elevators or when a caller puts you on hold. Therefore, he said, the moment seemed ideal to reimagine a new way of hearing it. There are simply too many other versions already out there. But Mr. With his old warhorse refitted for the 21st century, the inimitable red priest rides again. Kann eine Stadt inspirieren? Control, ownership and governance of data Consider, for example, the control that can be exercised over infrastructure and data protection, and their effective location and governance: there are substantial differences between Software as a Service SaaS or Platform as a Service PaaS solutions, which generally offer fewer security guarantees, and Infrastructure as a Service IaaS architectures, which give you full control over every single virtual server, its configuration and location, allowing you, for instance, to choose a data centre located in a European country.

It is important to check that the cloud provider you have chosen can assist your company in complying with the stringent directives imposed by the GDPR, the new EU regulations on the protection of personal data, including those aspects of data-processing or back-up that the provider performs autonomously for its own infrastructure. All in all, it is easier to replicate an entire server infrastructure, already installed and configured on a different cloud, than to migrate to a different software environment or platform, which will most likely require dozens or hundreds of customized integrations.

Infrastructure security On the subject of security and reliability, there are very few company data centres that can boast the level of protection against every type of risk afforded by those of a reliable enterprise class cloud provider. Network redundancy, control of physical access, energy autonomy in the event of a black-out, not to mention seismically and hydro-geologically secure locations, provide protection against problems which in some countries, unfortunately, affect the IT infrastructures of sometimes illustrious companies each and every year. The most significant growth will be in the Infrastructure as a Service and Platform as a Service sectors.

Organizations are coming through the experimentation phase and embracing the technology en masse. Traditional market assumptions regarding the cloud and the ways it is used will expand enormously. Though starting later than the more widely knowncloud providers, we have been able to take advantage of more recent technological developments to plan a cloud infrastructure specifically designed for enterprise-class companies, working from the ground up and without constraint. The second-generation bare metal architecture gives you the same level of control over the servers as you can achieve in your own data centre, thus ensuring an equal level of data confidentiality, greater security the vulnerabilities of the host operating system are eliminated , and better performance, because every machine can be directly accessed from the network and there are no connection bottlenecks in the hypervisor.

Two of them are in Europe: one in London and the other in the Frankfurt area. The latter will be inaugurated in October and will allow for the management of data and applications which for regulatory reasons must be based within the EU. Every region in which the service is available comprises three data centres, roughly 40 kilometres apart, interconnected by high-speed and very low-latency networks, guaranteeing the levels of service, redundancy of data, applications and connections, and speed of response, required by the most innovative digital services.

Sustainable palm oil can help fulfill increasing global food demand, support affordable food prices and poverty reduction; safeguard social interests, communities and workers, while dramatically reducing stress and degradation on the environment and wildlife. About RSPO In response to the urgent and pressing global call for sustainably-produced palm oil, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil RSPO was formed in with the objective of promoting the growth and use of sustainable oil palm products through credible global standards and engagement of stakeholders.

The seat of the association is in Zurich, Switzerland, while the secretariat is currently based in Kuala Lumpur with satellite offices in Jakarta, London and Zoetermeer NL. RSPO is a non-profit association that unites stakeholders from seven sectors of the palm oil industry - oil palm producers, palm oil processors or traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks and investors, environmental or nature conservation NGOs and social or developmental NGOs - to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil.

Such multi-stakeholder representation is mirrored in the governance structure of RSPO such that seats in the Executive Board and project-level Working Groups are fairly allocated to each sector. In this way, RSPO lives out the philosophy of the "roundtable" by giving equal rights to each stakeholder group to bring group-specific agendas to the roundtable, facilitating traditionally adversarial stakeholders and business competitors to work together towards a common objective and make decisions by consensus.

How it all began. As you might know did I already talk about this, at least in terms of Webcomics , in my Introduction to Webcomics :. For as long as I remember did I enjoy reading the small comics and cartoons in newspapers and magazines. Still discovering that this is a thing took me a while. I still remember that I would have had the chance to buy an entire set of the Dragonball Manga series at a flee market, but my grandpa and my mother argued against it, because it was too expensive and just some books with pictures.

As this was my first series — and I really liked both Anime — I also collected the magazine with new stories and additional info. Still regret it, never found such a great time line of the Dragonball Z universe again, as the one in those magazines…. During my A-Levels I got back into it, mostly because of different Manga, but also because of Webcomics, which I told you about in the different parts of category I linked above — and will tell you more about when I get around to adding to the series.

Unfortunately there is only a small one in Rostock , but that ones mostly for card and table top games. Buffy for one thing, because I want to know how the series continues, but also mostly Marvel -stuff and I recently bought the first volume of Preacher. That is also why my book collection and manga collection, simply because I chose to collect long series is much larger than my Comic collection, counting physical volumes and bookmarks. But one thing is for sure to quote the introduction again :.

Quite the opposite. Since I started using the Internet more frequently, I discovered many more Comics to enjoy. Take your pick and enjoy the read. I hoped you enjoyed this little look into two great webcomics. I know at least a couple of other comics with a similar theme, but on the one hand do I prefer focusing on two at a time with these things and on the the other hand do I think that they would work well enough on their own too.

So stay tuned for future updates. These include a Professor, his assistant and their strange experiments; Yetis; suicidal Lemmings, a killer-robot aspiring to become a kindergarten teacher, Mr. Riebmann, who lives in the wall beside his constantly annoyed neighbour and of course Death and his Poodle, who are the not so secret stars of the Comics.

With the Kickstarter Sauer wanted to be able to produce a whole series of animated comics, but aimed low and set it up for one episode first. The campaign funded that well that by now two of the six funded episodes are produced, with the remaining four being released in As far as I know are the stories for these episodes completely new, even if some parts of it where used in comics before.

In the books there are a few episode like narrations instead of the usual one strip jokes, so as a reader you can already get an idea of how quirky and intertwined his stories can be. It is certainly fun to finally have a voice for Death and Poodle and all the other characters. Different to the other two that were web comics first and were animated later, was this one animated first before also releasing comic book versions — at least from what I know. All of the episodes are and regularly updated on the YouTube Page linked above. What are your thoughts on animated Webcomics?

Is it something that interests you or do you prefer the written word? First let me explain:. Originally he set up these rules:. Inspired by this, many others took up the challenge and modified the original rules and added a few more rules:. If you encounter a shiny all rules are nullified. This of course is not a complete set of rules as Challengers individualize them, so every run has slightly different rules, but you get the gist of it. This is only a collection of the ones I enjoyed reading there are plenty more — even some that turned it into diaries. There are some things — besides the challenge — they all have in common:.

The Original run I mentioned before was for Ruby. By now he added a run for Fire-Red and is currently running one for White , but you should read the others before that. The art improved greatly over the years and also the story telling. One of the first runs I encountered. While Tales of Sinnoh Diamond follows some rather unusual way of story telling with a foul mouthed and sometimes reckless heroine and some pretty weird plots Team Gaga and Dialgaga , Myths of Unova White is an entirely different story.

It feels like Ky-nim put a lot more effort and planning into the comic-version of this run. She created whole new stories and legends about the in-game tales about Ancient Unova , she even used her own language system for telling them. Additionally to that are her character portrayals great. You come to like Nina and her team for all their different quirks and charms and you suffer with her, when one of her team members is left behind.

The art also improved greatly between the updates, as does the story telling. The characters feel unique and have interesting designs and personalities. It has funny characters and a twist to the usual Team Rocket story line, though that part has still to be explored further — it had only recently begun to fully include the consequences. And to top this all up: The art is quite beautiful. So if you want to try something different, you may want to give these a try:.
